Mr Danny Mitry

Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon

MB Bch BAO, MRCSI, FRCOphth, PhD

Mr. Danny Mitry is a Consultant Ophthalmologist and Vitreoretinal Surgeon at the Royal Free NHS Foundation Trust

He graduated medicine and surgery with honours from Trinity College Dublin in 2005 and began his clinical training at the Royal Victoria Eye and Ear Hospital in Dublin before moving to Scotland to complete a PhD at the University of Edinburgh.

His PhD was a study of the epidemiological, clinical and genetic associations of retinal detachment. Mr Mitry completed his higher surgical training in London and was appointed as a vitreoretinal fellow at at Moorfields Eye Hospital where he became an expert at managing surgical retinal disease.

His clinical interests include medical and surgical retinal disease, laser treatment and microincision cataract surgery. Conditions that he treats include: cataract, complex cataract, laser treatment, dry eyes, blepharitis, trauma, retinal detachment, diabetic eye disease, retinal vascular disease and macular degeneration. Mr. Mitry has performed over 2,000 cataract, vitreoretinal and laser procedures. His personal complication rate is lower than the national average and he has been commended as a safe, diligent and caring surgeon by many of his colleagues and patients.

Mr Mitry has published over 40 peer-reviewed manuscripts in leading international ophthalmology journals, including Ophthalmology, IOVS, Archives of Ophthalmology and Retina and has been a reviewer for several of these.

He has successfully held several major research grants in support of his academic research and has been an invited speaker at international ophthalmic conferences being awarded several research awards for his work.  Mr Mitry continues to conduct clinical research and has an active role in surgical training of junior trainees.
