The Royal Free Hospital is one of London’s eight designated ‘heart attack centres’ providing 24/7 emergency angioplasty treatment for patients presenting with acute ST elevation myocardial infarction. This service admits patients directly, by-passing A&E, for immediate consultant-delivered treatment. The trust consistently has the overall best performance in London for the speed of treating heart attack patients and was runner-up in the BMJ Awards Secondary Care Team in 2010.
There is a comprehensive service for permanent pacemaker insertion and device therapy including the implantation of cardio defibrillators (ICD) and atrio-biventricular pacemakers for heart failure patients.
