Dr Gaby Captur is a leading Consultant Cardiologist at the Royal Free London NHS Foundation Trust and Associate Professor at University College London (UCL), where she specialises in inherited heart conditions and advanced cardiac imaging.
At the Royal Free Hospital, she leads the Cardiomyopathy Service, caring for individuals with genetic and acquired heart muscle conditions. Academically, she directs the Cardiometabolic Research Department at UCL's Lifelong Health and Ageing Unit, focusing on heart health in ageing and population studies.
Dr Captur is internationally recognised for her expertise in cardiomyopathies, genetic heart diseases, heart failure, and cardiovascular disease prevention. She has over 18 years of experience delivering personalised, evidence-based cardiology care and is widely respected for her compassionate and thorough approach to patient management.
She trained in cardiology and multi-modality imaging at top centres in London, including the Heart Hospital and Barts Heart Centre, and she completed a cardiovascular magnetic resonance (CMR) research fellowship at the US National Institute of Health and the Brigham Women's Hospital in Boston. She holds expert-level accreditation in CMR, echocardiography (including adult congenital and transoesophageal echo), and cardiac CT. She completed her PhD at UCL, holds an MSc in Cardiology with Distinction, and is a Fellow of both the European Society of Cardiology and the Royal College of Physicians.
Dr Captur is also a pioneering clinical researcher with over 135 peer-reviewed publications. She leads a team of researchers at UCL and has won over 30 national and international awards and grants, including prestigious research fellowships from the NIHR, EACVI and BHF, as well as prizes from the American Heart Association, American College of Cardiology, and the Society for Cardiovascular Magnetic Resonance. She invented widely used CMR calibration tools and a patented electrocardiographic imaging vest to improve risk assessment for sudden cardiac death.
As the UK National Taskforce Lead for Cardiomyopathy (BSCMR), Dr Captur is at the forefront of innovation in cardiac care. She is regularly invited to speak at international conferences and remains an active member of key professional societies including the ESC, AHA, SCMR, BSCMR, and the Royal College of Physicians.
