Mr Murali Somasundaram

Consultant General and HPB Surgeon
Mr. Murali Somasundaram is a Consultant General Surgeon based in London with a specialist interest in Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary (HPB) surgery. Currently, he holds the position of Consultant General Surgeon and Service Line Lead for General Surgery at Barnet and Chase Farm NHS Hospitals, having been promoted to the role within 12 months of joining the department.
Mr. Somasundaram's career includes a significant tenure as a Senior Clinical Fellow in HPB and Liver Transplant Surgery at Royal Free London NHS Foundation Trust. He undertook surgical training in North Central London gaining exposure to HPB, transplant, vascular, colorectal, bariatric and Upper GI surgery.
Prior to this, he was a Surgical Research Fellow in Transplantation at the Oxford Transplant Centre and Northwick Park Institute for Medical Research conducting research in tissue engineering abdominal organs.
Mr. Somasundaram holds a Doctor of Philosophy (DPhil) in Surgical Sciences from the University of Oxford and he is a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons in England (FRCS). He graduated with his Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) from Queen Mary University of London in 2005 and completed his Bachelor's Degree in Clinical Materials in 2004. He received the Chairman's Award for Leadership for Barnet Hospital in 2025.
His practice focuses on a patient centred approach bringing extensive training and specialist experience to general surgical care with specific expertise in gallbladder surgery.
