As a leading centre in this field, our colorectal surgeons have a wealth of experience and expertise in their fields, treating both NHS and private patients. Supported by our team of dedicated and highly-skilled nurses, we take pride in providing an excellent level of care for all patients.

We provide a 24/7 consultant-led service, treating both inpatients and outpatients. Wherever required, our colorectal consultants will also work closely with other departments and liaise on any additional care needs. For example, with colorectal treatments there is often overlap with gastroenterology too. We are proud to provide a multi-disciplinary and tailored approach, putting each patient’s individual needs first.

What colorectal conditions does royal free hospital treat?

Colorectal medicine involves a wide range of conditions and problems involving the colon (also known as the large intestine/bowel), rectum and anus. These conditions can affect men and women of all ages, and many are very common, particularly as people get older. Royal Free Hospital’s colorectal specialists have a wealth of expertise in treating a large number of conditions involving these areas.

This can range from very common problems such as haemorrhoids (piles), which may in some cases require a minor surgical procedure, rectal prolapse and rectocele (when the front wall of the rectum bulges, or herniates, into the wall of the vagina), through to more major conditions such as colon cancer. In some cases, colorectal surgery may also be required for patients with chronic inflammatory bowel diseases, such as Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis.

Treatment for cancer and severe inflammatory conditions may include colectomy surgery (surgery to remove all or part of the affected bowel) and colostomy or ileostomy surgery, where the bowel is diverted to an opening created in the abdomen (this is called a stoma), enabling waste to be passed through into a bag. The procedure may be reversed after a period of time, restoring normal bowel function.
