Consultant Neurologist

Dr Bhattacharjee studied at Guy’s and St. Thomas’ Hospitals where he achieved a 1st Class in Physiology and completed an MB/PhD programme (funded by the Migraine Trust) and qualified with distinction. He did post-graduate training at St. Thomas’, Hammersmith, Royal Brompton, National (Queen Square) and Kings College Hospitals. He trained as a Specialist Registrar in Neurology between the Royal Free and National (Queen Square) Hospitals.

He is a Consultant Neurologist with a large NHS general neurology practice and has expertise in the diagnosis and treatment of all common neurological diseases including headache, blackouts and epilepsy, Parkinson’s, and MS. He runs a specialist clinic in peripheral nerve and neuromuscular diseases at the Royal Free Hospital where he attracts referrals from around the country. As a specialist in immunological diseases he regularly deals with diseases of other organ systems including rheumatological, renal, dermatological and infectious diseases where there is neurological involvement. Furthermore, he runs a clinic jointly with a Consultant Haematologist seeing patients with haematological diseases affecting the nervous system.

He is a member of the Royal Free IVIg committee and has helped develop a large plasma exchange service with the haematology department treating patients with various neuro-immunological disorders and is involved in clinical trials on investigating this. He presents work regularly at national and international conferences and serves in an advisory capacity to industry involved in the treatment of neuro-immunological diseases including MS and CIDP.

Research interests


Dr Bhattacharjee runs a joint scientific-clinical collaboration between Royal Free and Kings College looking at the mechanisms of nerve damage due to ion channel dysregulation. He is also setting up clinical trials investigating the efficacy of plasma exchange in treating neuro-immunological conditions especially those that are antibody-mediated.
