Mr Norbert Kang

MBBS MD FRCS (PLAST)

Consultant Plastic Surgeon

Mr Norbert Kang is a consultant plastic surgeon at the Royal Free Hospital. He graduated from Charing Cross and Westminster Medical School (now part of Imperial College) in 1989 and undertook basic surgical training in Washington DC and Leeds. He trained in plastic surgery in London including fellowships in the peripheral nerve injury unit in Stanmore.

He was appointed as a consultant in 2002 and has specific interests in all aspects of hand surgery, prosthetic reconstruction after amputation and prominent ear correction. He has been performing osseointegration surgery since 2005 and has an active research interest in this and allied areas, such as targeted muscle reinnervation and regenerative peripheral nerve interface surgery, for the treatment of neuroma pain and phantom limb pain.  His research portfolio includes 88 articles in peer-reviewed journals, 4 book chapters, 1 book and 3 patents including the patent for the earFold implant - developed for minimally invasive correction of prominent ears.

He is a founder member of the Relimb™ Service based at the Royal Free Hospital.  Relimb™ was setup in 2018 to provide the UKs first dedicated reconstructive service for amputees and patients who have suffered from the consequences of complex soft-tissue or bony injuries as a result of trauma or disease.  The aim of Relimb™ is to create a one-stop shop where patients are able to access all their reconstructive needs, regardless of the nature of the anatomical site and composition of their injury.

Mr Kang and his team offer the following services through Relimb™

  • Amputee reconstruction - including stump refashioning and scar revision.
  • Originators of the ‘fascial sock’ technique for stabilisation of the soft tissue sin amputations.
  • Osseointegration (Upper and Lower limb).
  • Osseointegration (after craniofacial injury or loss) for fixation of a prosthetic eye/nose/ear.
  • Bone anchored hearing aids.
  • Surgical treatment for Neuroma and Phantom Limb Pain.
  • Targeted Muscle Reinnervation (TMR).
  • Regenerative Peripheral Nerve Interface (RPNI).
  • Complex surgical reconstruction (bone, soft-tissue and nerve) of the upper and lower limbs.
  • Soft-tissue reconstruction (any – including external genitalia, breast, abdominal wall, perineum).
  • Management of complex hand problems (e.g. after combined injury to bone, tendon, nerve, soft-tissue).
  • Cranioplasties following head injuries to restore the skull's integrity and protect the brain, as well as improve aesthetics.
  • Perineal reconstruction procedures including those for buried penis, hypospadias, and abdominoperineal resections.
