Breast enlargement surgery (also known as breast augmentation) is a procedure involving the surgical addition of silicone implants to the patients breast area with the idea of improving the size, shape, form and feel.

Many women have surgery on their breasts to increase size and allow for a fuller shape. Other reasons as to why women would choose to have breast enlargement includes a loss of volume due to weight loss, not having the desired size, or asymmetry. At the Royal Free PPU our consultants are highly trained experts and will tailor each service to the patients needs ensuring all procedures are carried out to the highest standard.

The procedure

Most commonly performed under general anaesthetic, breast enlargement is one of the simplest and most tried and tested of cosmetic surgery procedures. Implants will be inserted by the surgeon into the body through a small incision made on the crease of the breast which after the procedure is then sealed with dissolvable stitches. On the day of your operation, your surgeon will insert an agreed sized implant, designed to fit your body shape and silhouette, behind each breast, giving your breasts a fuller shape. The procedure takes about an hour. You then stay in hospital overnight.

Aftercare

Recovery is usually quick. You may need to take a week off work, during which we remove your stitches and dressing. You should wear a support bra for a few weeks for comfort and to help the breast implants settle.

You will also receive a series of follow-up appointments with a nurse, and a six week check up with your surgeon. Full details on your post operative care will be given to you by your consultant.
