Botox

Botox injections are widely used for both medical and cosmetic purposes. They work by temporarily blocking nerve signals to the muscle in a particular area – meaning the muscles relax and stop moving for a period of time.

Cosmetically, this can help with the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, such as crow’s feet, frown lines and lines around the mouth. The effects aren’t permanent, and often follow-up treatments are needed, but Botox injections are a popular choice for people who want to reduce signs of facial ageing and achieve a fresher, more smooth appearance without opting for surgery.

Treatments are usually completed within an hour. There’s normally some swelling and redness for a day or two, and it can take up to two weeks to see the full results.

Medically, Botox injections can help with conditions such as excessive sweating, ‘blepharospasm’ (a condition that causes involuntary twitching and contracting of the eyelids) and facial tics.

Lip fillers

Lip fillers are injections to enhance the lips. They can be used to achieve a more ‘plumped up’ appearance, or add definition to the pout and cupid’s bow. Enhancing the lips can help with smoothing out the fine lines that may develop around the lips too.

Lips can lose volume as we age, and some people have naturally thin lips. Lip fillers usually take around 30 minutes to complete. Local anaesthetic will be administered first, to make the procedure more comfortable, and the results are usually instant and can last for up to six months – although this may vary.
