Gynecomastia surgery (male chest reduction surgery) is a procedure in which the breast tissue in the male area is broken down and then removed from the body.

An overdeveloped chest can be caused as a result of lost weight or ageing which allows for extra tissue surrounding the nipples thus creating thew breast. Male chest reduction is designed to remove the excess fat and offer the patient a more slimmer rejuvenated appearance.

Procedure

This procedure will be performed under a general anaesthetic as a day case and takes around 60-90 minutes to complete, however depending on the patient an overnight stay may be required.

Your surgeon will make a small incision around the areola (the dark area surrounding the nipple) and proceed to remove all the excess fat. If there is a large amount of excess fat surrounding the tissue then liposuction may also be used. Once complete your surgeon will re-position the nipple and proceed to stitch it back together.

Aftercare

Bandages will be applied to the breast area for support and to limit any swelling for a few days, you may also be given pain relief medicine to help any pain that will occur. You may be asked to wear a supporting garment for around 2-6 weeks for extra support. Scars will fade as recovery continues.

It is recommended you take a week off work to ensure a full recovery and avoid strenuous activity for around 3-4 weeks
