A lipoma is a soft, fatty lump that develops slowly under the skin.
Check if you have a lipoma
Theyβre generally harmless, although any new or unusual lumps and bumps should always be checked out by a doctor, just to be on the safe side.
Lipomas can potentially occur anywhere on the body but tend to be seen most often on the chest, shoulders and arms, as well as on the back and thighs. They can also develop within the abdominal region and on or near the bowels, which may result in other symptoms such as nausea and constipation.
Treatment
While itβs not always medically necessary to have a lipoma removed, some people may opt to do so β particularly if they grow quite large and are affecting your self-confidence, or causing any physical discomfort and additional problems.
The specialist surgeons at Hadley Wood Hospital offer a range of minimally invasive techniques for removing lipomas. Most of the time, this will involve a quick and very safe procedure with minimal scarring and you should be able to leave hospital soon afterwards. Deeper abdominal lipomas may sometimes require a slightly longer procedure.
