A Sleep Study may be opted for when long term breathing problems such as snoring can obstruct your airways and prevent air from travelling to the lungs which will disrupt your breathing pattern thus effecting your quality of sleep.

When asleep your breathing can weaken, if you suffer from chest problems such as bronchitis breathing can start to become shallow which in turn means your carbon dioxide levels could rise and levels of oxygen could decrease.

Sleep studies are offered to diagnose and assess the presence of sleep-disordered breathing (snoring, apnoea) and nocturnal hypoventilation which may lead to symptoms such as headaches and excessive tiredness during the day. We hold sleep and ventilation clinics where we see patients with sleep apnoea at the Royal Free Hospital.

How it works

In a sleep study we make overnight recordings of:

  • Oxygen levels
  • Heart Rate
  • Sleep Position
  • Breathing Effort

Using a portable sleep diagnostic device (WatchPAT) the sensors are attached and then the patient is allowed to fall asleep as they wish. When sleeping, the sensors will monitor breathing patterns and oxygen levels with the information being sent to a computer. These sensors are to be removed the following morning. All studies are not painful.

WatchPAT

WatchPAT is an FDA-approved portable diagnostic device that uses innovative technology to ensure the accurate screening, detection, and follow-up of sleep apnea.

It has an ease of use and testing is done in the comfort of your own bedroom; which is an environment that is a reflection of the pattern of your sleeping habits. When using the device your consultant will explain how to set up to record the results accurately.
