Trigger point injections (TPI) are used to treat pain associated with muscular trigger points, commonly known as ‘knots’.

Why do I need trigger point injections?

Trigger point injections (TPI) are used to treat pain associated with muscular trigger points, commonly known as ‘knots’.

These are basically tight knots of muscle fibre that can form due to ongoing tension within certain muscles. Trigger points are very common and often resolve on their own, or with lifestyle changes or physiotherapy. But in some cases, they can become chronic and may also cause referred pain in peripheral nerves, such as pain that runs along the arm due to problems within the neck and shoulder muscles.

The procedure

Trigger point injections involve injecting a local anaesthetic or steroid solution directly into the trigger point. Sometimes, a series of injections may be required, but several sites can be treated at the same time and the treatment can bring very effective long-term relief. As well as a wide range of muscle groups – commonly in the shoulders, neck, back, legs and buttocks – trigger point injections are sometimes also used to treat pain associated with fibromyalgia, tension-type headaches and myofascial pain syndrome muscular (MPS), a form of chronic muscle pain. Physiotherapy follow-up is generally recommended.
