Coeliac disease is an autoimmune condition, which causes a damaging reaction to occur within the small intestine whenever a person consumes gluten.

Symptoms

Symptoms can be very similar to those of other digestive conditions, including diarrhoea, excess wind and bloating, indigestion and abdominal pain. Coeliac disease can also cause wider symptoms, such as fatigue, unexplained weight loss, an itchy skin rash and tingling in the hands and feet.

Coeliac disease is more complex than straightforward gluten intolerance, however, and can cause serious long-term complications if not managed appropriately – which is done by eliminating all traces of gluten from the diet. Consuming even a small amount of gluten can lead to inflammatory damage in the gut lining, which means the body isn’t able to properly absorb nutrients.

Diet

Being diagnosed with coeliac disease often involves significantly changing your diet and daily eating habits. At Hadley Wood, we understand that this can seem overwhelming at first – you’re not alone and we are here to help.

Our dietitian can help you on your journey to embracing a gluten-free diet, that ensures you are still able to enjoy your food and lifestyle and get the full range of nutrients you need. This includes advice and guidance on foods that commonly contain ‘hidden gluten’ or low traces of gluten, how to read food labels and gluten-free brands and restaurants. It is also fairly common for people with coeliac disease to have co-existing food intolerances, such as lactose intolerance. Through one-on-one consultations, we can help devise personalised plans tailored to your individual needs.

With the right information and advice, we’ll help ensure you gain a sense of control and confidence over managing your health.
