Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery

Our private plastic and reconstructive surgery services are provided at the Royal Free Hospital, Hampstead and Hadley Wood Hospital, High Barnet.

Plastic and reconstructive surgery, which includes cosmetic surgery, is one of the major surgical disciplines at the Royal Free London NHS Foundation Trust.

At the heart of the service is dedication and commitment to continuous improvement while embracing the latest advances and technologies. It is one of the UK’s leading and largest plastic-surgery units. Through its links with University College London Medical School, it is also a major teaching and research centre, particularly in the field of tissue engineering and stem cells.

The department has a team of consultants who undertake general plastic surgery procedures. Each consultant has specialist interests such as facial reanimation, ear reconstruction and complex microsurgical breast reconstruction (such as DIEP) as well as novel minimally invasive restoration of appearance technology with the help of stem cells.

We are a national centre of excellence for facial reanimation surgery, ear reconstruction and breast reconstruction. Consultants are involved in multidisciplinary treatments of skin cancers, sarcomas, breast cancer as well as major abdominal wall reconstruction. A comprehensive selection of procedures to improve aesthetic appearance is also offered, such as minimal-scar facelift and total body contouring.

Plastic & reconstructive treatments we offer include…

Breast reconstruction

Breast reconstruction is surgery to recreate a breast following surgery for breast cancer. It will restore breast balance and symmetry for women who have had one-sided surger or can reconstruct both breasts if you have had bilateral mastectomy to reduce your breast cancer risk.

Cosmetic surgery

Our surgeons are some of the most experienced and skilled to be found in the world, having performed hundreds – even thousands – of procedures, using the very latest techniques in pre-operative planning and surgical procedures. We offer breast surgery, facial surgery, body surgery and cosmetic surgery for men.

Ear injury

An ear injury usually caused as a result of an accident is a procedure that involves correcting and re-shaping the ear to reduce bruising and swelling.

Ear reconstruction

Ear reconstruction surgery involves a set of procedures performed by a surgeon to correct and reshape a patient’s ear. Ear surgery can be used to treat disease or injury whether it be the auditory tube, middle ear, inner ear or the vestibular systems

Reconstructive microsurgery

Complex microsurgical reconstruction after trauma, cancer and congenital birth differences.

Osseointegration

For some patients, fitting a prosthetic limb or body part in the traditional way, using a socket (for upper or lower limb amputees) or skin-adhesives (for facial prosthetics), can be just too difficult to manage. These patients may benefit from advances in Prosthetic Reconstruction using a surgical procedure called osseointegration.

Consultations

For us, the consultation is a key part of the patient journey. We are committed to ensuring all patients feel fully informed about their treatment options and any associated risks and supporting you in making the right decision for you.

Plastic & reconstructive surgery after care

Most of our procedures are carried out on a day-case basis, meaning you’ll be able to go home shortly afterwards – but aftercare is still very important. We will ensure your needs and comfort are well taken care of during your time in hospital, and that you are fully equipped with all the advice and information you need when you go home.
